Palahala means Sable Antelope in Swahili. In 2010, we made the decision to focus on building a top-notch Sable herd rather than maintaining multiple exotic species, as we had previously done. We also changed our Ranch name to “Palahala Ranch” as a constant reminder to stay focused on our goal.
We began breeding and raising exotics in 1985 and purchased our first Sable in 2005. At that time, acquiring Sable females was very difficult, and finding high-quality females or males was even more challenging. Coming from a ranching family, we held each Sable to strict benchmarks, including confirmation, solid feet, prolificacy, calm temperament, and, of course, impressive horns. Achieving these standards took us about 10 years and involved evaluating numerous Sable. Establishing that solid foundational herd paid off immensely for the events that followed.
In 2015, I learned that a West Zambian Sable Bull in Africa, named Mopanie, had sold for $1.96 million dollars. This inspired me to see if I could locate West Zambian Sable in the US. In 2018, I successfully acquire our first West Zambian genetics, a Bull, we call “Z-Man”. Today, every Sable Antelope on the Palahala Ranch carries West Zambian DNA. We now have the largest genetic pool of West Zambian DNA in the US, consisting of at least 4 different maternal lines and 6 of the only known Mitochondrial West Zambians in the US.
Palahala Ranch Sable can enhance any breeding program, that is wanting to grow big Sable while contributing genetic diversity and hybrid vigor to produce healthier, stronger Sable. The West Zambian Sable are having world record results in South Africa, making them an advantageous addition to the Sable Antelope community in the United States.
